Neil deGrasse Tyson Quote

I love Neil deGrasse Tyson! He's my favorite scientist!

He's obviously got a great wealth of knowledge in that head of his. He's also very personable. He was in Salt Lake City a few years ago but I didn't find out until it was too late to get a seat. I was rather saddened by that.

I came across a quote of his just recently. It appears he and I have similar feelings about education Whether it's taking place in a brick and mortar building, or at home, kids need to be taught empathy.

Now I adore kids! I just love them, but understanding is a complicated thing. It's not just a matter of feeling bad for someone -that's sympathy, or happy for them, it's also understanding why people act the way they do, because if we can't "get" why they are behaving the way they are, sometimes in a manner that we're frustrated with, we can't empathize completely. And to complicate it even further, even when we are educated to understand behavior, we're at a loss if we don't know how to react properly and communicate in a way that helps the situation.

If I could design an education I'd start with empathy, understanding, communication skills, and how to handle emotions, ours and the emotions of others. Next is the importance of health and how to maintain it, including how to cook, eat properly and exercise. Then comes studying the arts/being creative.  Only after those "core" subjects should history, math, science, reading (reading skills being the most important) and other subjects come into play.

Here is the quote by Neil deGrasse Tyson:

"Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy."

I decided to put it on a t-shirt along with a painting of flowers I did a few months ago. What do you think?

I'm happy to have found another use for the flower painting besides my wall hanging:)

Be sure and leave a comment if you'd like to add to the conversation:)
